Summer classic
No summer treat quite rewards the taste buds like strawberries and cream. Whether you’re at a sporting event, chilling out at the beach, or relaxing in the garden, strawberries provide ideal refreshment.
They’re healthy too, only containing about 30 calories per 100 grams and packed with vitamin C. There really is no reason not to indulge to your heart’s content – unless, of course, you’re drenching your berries in full-fat double or whipped cream.
Careful with the cream
Of course, strawberries and cream have become a summer favourite for a reason. When it comes to taste, they go together wonderfully. What could beat the contrast between zingy strawberries and velvet-smooth cream?
The only problem is that just 100ml of double cream adds around 450 calories and 49 grams of fat to your plate of berries. And summer’s certainly not the time you want to start adding inches to your waist and sapping your energy levels with fatty foods.
Lower-fat loveliness
The good news is that you can indulge in strawberries and cream – while keeping your summer light and lovely. There are various alternatives available, offering full-flavour creaminess without the full-fat calories.
Elmlea, for instance, is a great alternative to full-fat cream. It has at least 30% less fat than the cream equivalent, with the light varieties containing at least 50% less fat than double or single cream.
Iced indulgence
Another idea is to try your strawberries with ice cream. Smooth vanilla, for instance, complements the freshness of strawberries beautifully. And again, it doesn’t have to wreck your healthy eating aims. Carte d'Or Vanilla Light has 50% less fat and 30% fewer calories than classic Vanilla, but tastes just as creamy.
